The University of Manchester today revealed details of a new five year project to research and catalogue the Medieval wardrobe. Backed by a grant of £765,000 from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the study will compile a database of items worn in Britain between 500 and 1300 years ago.
Professor Owen-Crocker, a costume historian and Anglo Saxon specialist commented on the importance of the project; “Nowadays, some of us take mass production and transport for granted and fail to understand what earlier life was like. In those days every thread every person wore had passed between some woman’s finger and thumb.”
